LIN Woon Fui and Fairuzizuan Tazari have yet to make an impact in a major event but doubles coach Rexy Mainaky is confident that will change in the Doha Asian Games.
Rexy’s optimism is based on Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan’s good track record against Asian pairs and the Indonesian believes this will make the difference in Doha.
This is probably one of the reasons which prompted Rexy to drop the off-form Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and include Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan, ranked World No 9, two weeks ago.
I’ve got no worries about Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan as they normally play well against Asian pairs and this will give them a chance to return with a medal, said Rexy.
Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng (of China) are the favourites but Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan have beaten them twice this year and they can also beat the top Indonesian and Korean pairs.
They normally struggle against the Europeans but this is something they don’t have to worry about in Doha.
It has been a tough year for them but they are playing well at the right moment and I’m confident I can rely on them this time.
Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan repeated their All-England victory over Cai Yun-Haifeng at the World Cup in Yiyang, China, last month where they also toppled Indonesia’s second ranked pair Luluk Hadiayanto-Alven Yulianto in the group stage. Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan lost to Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia in the final.
In the World Championships, Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan defeated Asian Games medal contenders Guo Zhendong-Xie Zhongbo of China. Top Korean pair Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae are the only combination they have yet to meet.
However, their biggest threat in the Asian Games will be Markis-Hendra who Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan have not beaten in three meetings.
Markis-Hendra are in top form and Indonesia have set a gold medal target for them but this will definitely put them under tremendous pressure, said Rexy.
If Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan meet them, the advantage will be on our side. Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan must remain positive and they will eventually make the breakthrough in Doha.
Woon Fui-Fairuzizuan were on the verge of quitting after being dropped from the Thomas Cup squad in May but this is their chance to repay Rexy’s faith, and more importantly, make a name for themselves.(nst.com.my)
