SINGAPORE, June 7 (Bernama) -- The 2003 All-England Champion Muhd Hafiz Hashim leads six Malaysian players to the second round of the US,000 (RM620,000) Aviva Open Singapore 2006 badminton championship here Wednesday.

Hafiz beat China's Qui Yanbo 17-21, 21-8 and 21-6 to set a clash with Danish Kenneth Jonassen who earlier beat Malaysia's Chan Kwong Beng 21-7 and 21-12.

Hafiz seemed to have difficulties in finding his rhythm in the first set, trailing 8-12 at one stage before giving in at 17-21.

But the second set saw a more determined Hafiz, leading 3-1 and then 6-1, 11-4, 17-6 before winning the set 21-7. He maintained the same aggressive form in the decider and wrapped up the set 21-6 in 47 minutes.

The first round was tough as I had to adjust to the environment... the air-conditioning created a draft. My opponent also had many lucky shots, said the lanky Hashim.

Asked on his chances in the five-star tournament, Hafiz said he just want to do his best. Hafiz exited in the third round in the tournament last year.

I feel that the level of competition this year is tougher. I think my biggest contender would be Simon Santoso from Indonesia, he said.

His opponent Thursday, Jonassen had an easy game of 21-7, 21-12 against Malaysia's Chan Kwong Beng. Overall it was a good warm up game for tomorrow, said Jonassen.

As Hafiz was leading in his game, his teammate Kuan Beng Hong was struggling in the adjacent court against Singapore's top singles player Ronald Susilo. Kuan eventually lost the game 16-21, 21-18, 16-21 in 50 minutes.

I am disappointed... I made many mistakes, probably because I was in a hurry to get points, Kuan said.

Other Malaysian men's singles players who made it to the second round Thursday are Ismail Saman who received a walkover from Indonesia's hotshot Taufik Hidayat who pulled out because of back injury, Tan Chun Seang, Hafiz's elder brother Muhd Roslin Hashim, Kenn Lim and Yew Thien Law.

Malaysia's challenge in the women's double second round Thursday is shouldered by Ooi Sock Ai-Fong Chew Yen and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty.

The men's doubles saw cheers in the Malaysian camp when the veteran pair of Lee Wan Wah-Choong Tan Fook advanced into the second round, beating teammate Goh Ying Jin-Mohd Razif Abdul Rahman 21-16, 21-16.

Two other pairs also made it to the second round, namely the upcoming pair of Koo Kien Keat-Chang Hong Ming and Hoon Thien How-Tan Boon Heong.

Malaysia's challenge in the mixed doubles ended disastrously in the first round Wednesday when all three pairs lost their respective games.

They are Khoo Ching Chiat-Haw Chiou Hwee, Koo Kien Keat-Wong Pei Tty and Tan Bin Shen-Ooi Yu Hang.

The women's singles will start Thursday with Julia Wong is the sole flag bearer for Malaysia. She will be up against Jie Yao of the Netherlands.(Bernama)
