LEE Chong Wei, who feared he was going to miss the Doha Asian Games next month following a car accident in Kuala Lumpur on Friday, can now rest easy as he has been given a clean bill of health.

Chong Wei was driving his car to Bukit Jalil after dinner when he was hit by another car from behind.

The other driver had lost control after one the tyres burst as he was changing lanes.

The World No 2 needed six stitches for his head injury.

Chong Wei, who was discharged from Sunway Medical Centre yesterday, thought injury would end his dream of winning an Asian Games gold.

He only needs to rest for three days before resuming training again.

I was worried and thought I might not be able to play in the Asian Games. However, the doctor has confirmed it is a minor injury and the stitches will be removed on Monday, said Chong Wei yesterday.

I feel fine and there are no concussions. However, I will consult with (Datuk) Dr Ramlan (Aziz, National Sports Council director-general) before resuming training again.

It is big relief as I can now concentrate on my preparations for the Asian Games.

Chong Wei has been struggling with his form.

His troubles started with defeat to Bao Chunlai of China in the quarter-finals of the World Championships in September.

Chong Wei was hoping to restore his battered reputation in the Japan Open last month but Taufik Hidayat added more gloom with a convincing victory.

Chong Wei needs no reminder that Doha will be a tough assignment.

His main rival will be world champion and World No 1 Lin Da of China but Chong Wei feels the likes of Chunlai, Taufik and even South Korean Lee Hyun Il are equally as tough.

I have to battle hard for a medal considering that several of my rivals have caught up, said Chong Wei.

Lin Dan is the favourite and the others are equally strong. It is like starting all over again for me but I will give it my best shot.

Chong Wei will have another three weeks to fine-tune his preparation before the team competition starts in Doha on Nov 29.(nst.com.my)
