The Asian Badminton Confederation (ABC) is planning to bring one major tournament every year to India. Newly elected secretary-general of ABC and the president of the Badminton Association of India V K Verma said, besides this, he plans to make Hyderabad a nerve-centre for the shuttle game in Asia. My aim after becoming the secretary-general of ABC and vice president of the International Badminton Federation is to bring to India a major tournament every year.

We have made a beginning with the Syed Modi Grand Prix tournament this year at Lucknow and the Asian Championship at Hyderabad from September 6-11, Verma told reporters at his felicitation ceremony on Monday night. I have proposed to the Asian body that an 'Asian Centre of Excellence' with Pullela Gopichand heading it be set up at Hyderabad.

This would be a second-tier centre for helping developing south Asian countries to train with and coached by Indians, Verma, who was felicitated by the Maharashtra Badminton Association, said. Verma further said India is considered as among the developed badminton centres in Asia along with the big four China, Indonesia, Malaysia and Korea. Just like our players have gone to Guangzhou in China to train with the top players and get trained by the top coaches, players from neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka can develop their skills by training with our players, Verma said. We are trying to rope in (sports goods firm) Yonex to sponsor the centre, he said.
