PETALING JAYA: Peter Gade-Christensen endured a roller-coaster ride in his new role as the second singles en route to helping Denmark seal their place in the Thomas Cup Finals on Sunday.

Denmark defeated England 3-0 in the final tie of the European qualifiers in Holland to book their ticket for the Finals, which will be held in Jakarta from May 11-19.

In the semi-finals, the Danes beat Germany 3-0 while England downed Poland 3-0.

England, Germany and Poland are also assured of their places in the Finals by finishing as the top four teams in the European Zone.

Gade-Christensen, the world No. 8, had to play as the second singles because he is ranked three rungs lower than team-mate Kenneth Jonassen based on the Jan 31 world rankings, which was used to determine the seedings of the team.

Gade-Christensen won both his matches in the semi-final and final – but in contrasting fashions.

In the tie against England, Gade-Christensen did well to clinch the winning point by defeating Rajiv Ouseph 21-10, 21-17.

Earlier, the Danes had taken a 2-0 lead through their new number one singles player Jonassen and the veterans Jens Eriksen-Martin Lundgaard Hansen.

But it was in the semi-final tie against Germany that Gade-Christensen lived dangerously.

He had to toil for 63 minutes to beat Marc Zwiebler 21-12, 15-21, 21-16 to give Denmark a 2-1 lead.

Earlier, Jonassen scored a 21-12, 21-18 win over Bjoern Joppien but Eriksen-Lundgaard faltered to a 19-21, 13-21 loss to Roman Spitko-Michael Fuchs.

Mathias Boe-Joachim Fischer clinched the winning point against the Germans with 21-17, 19-21, 21-9 over Kristof Hopp-Johannes Schoettler.

Denmark, powered by Tine Rasmussen, also checked into the Uber Cup Finals by virtue of emerging as champions of the European qualifiers.

Holland and Germany also booked their tickets to the Finals.

Scotland finished fourth but their place in the Uber Cup Finals is not guaranteed yet. They will only make it if their overall standing is better than the fourth-ranked team from the Asian qualifiers.
